Aircraft navigation app ready and waiting for jolla

Postby wspilotpc » September 7th, 2012, 5:44 pm

I have an open source aircraft navigation app ready and waiting for a Meego (Jolla?) device.
It is the only aircraft navigation application that is able to render in 3D (OpenGL) and it uses (USB) environmental sensors (gps, pressure, temp and humidity).
see https://sourceforge.net/projects/pilotnavigator/
Currently runs stable on Ubuntu netbook.
So I am waiting for the Jolla specs (screen, D-bus, etc.)....
Also nice as a base for hiking and nautical apps.

Really interesting application, nice work! Does this only show where you are going or does it show other planes too?

Only shows were you are, route/points to follow and alt-warning (based on standard aviation altitude[=pressue, not gps altitude] ). Playback is alo a feature that the propriety competition doesn't have.
Have been thinking about showing other aircrafts, but that's not simple, you need a mobile internet connection of all aircrafts and having a handling server; or getting the (transponders) info from air traffic controll. The latter can be expected to claim money for the info, like they do for other aeronautical data as well.

Sounds good!

This internet connection is true and I don't know any about applications coding but does it be possibly to exploit this site http://www.flightradar24.com/ information's? Because this site show every planes, plane altitude, where they are going etc.

This info is supplied by air traffic control, based on the transponder signals from the aircrafts.
It's real nice, but most of the aircrafts are missing: all private aircrafts are not there. These are the most important for my app, because they share the same space (risk of collision).
Still, this would be sth you would want in your cockpit. There are some systems (aware of other aircrafts), but they are very expensive.
My solution would only need a strong mobile internet connection, a ground server and the implementation in the app.
I haven't tested mobile internet during flight seriously, but what I experienced till now was a very weak connection (even at 1200ft). Better antenna's may help.
